Implementation

Choose from a series of online organizers at the drop of a hat! Each graphic organizer includes Teaching Notes with lessons and tips on how to use graphic organizers in the classroom. Students can use these online organizers independently, with partners, in small and large groups.

Classroom Management

Review a sample lessons using the K-W-L chart:

LESSON 1 SUPPORT FOR READING

• Before students begin a new chapter or selection display the KWL Chart. Fill in the topic that will be studied.
• Ask students to complete a KWL Chart listing what they know and want to learn about the topic.
• Ask a volunteer to dictate examples from his or her own lists as you fill in the graphic organizer.
• Ask students to read the text and then complete the “What I Have Learned” column, making any necessary adjustments to the “What I Know” column.

LESSON 2 SUPPORT FOR WRITING

• Display the KWL Chart and write a topic in the blank.
• Ask students to volunteer what they already know about the topic. Then ask them to volunteer what they want to learn.
• Work with the students to convert items in the “What I Want to Learn” column into research questions.
• Choose one or more of these questions. Ask students to research the question(s) and write a brief explanatory paper on the topic. Student papers should identify the topic and answer the research question(s).
• After the students have written their papers, conduct a class discussion in which you complete the third column of the KWL Chart.
