Building an Overhead Water Rocket Launcher
This site gives instructions for building a soda bottle rocket which is powered by water. It also tells how to build the rocket. Students can add fins and/or a nosecone to their water rocket. A bicycle pump is used to inflate air into the rocket. When released the rocket goes into the air as the water and air come out. Then they can test their designs to see which rocket goes the highest or stays in the air the longest, etc. Video instructions are included.
As students design their soda bottle water rockets they must use the engineering design process while exploring Newton's Third Law of Motion.
