Applying the Scientific Method
This site offers a short (1:15) video illustrating how the scientific method is being used in a real situation to solve a real problem. The experiment is roof-gardening. It would be a great supplement or follow-up for an introduction lesson to the scientific method. The source also offers detailed explainations and follow-up discussion questions. Additionally, this could lead to a classroom gardening experiment.
By watching this video, students will understand how the scientific method is applied in real-world situations. They will see how a question is formed (in this case, from an attempt to save plant species and improve the environment through roof-top gardening), as well as how to choose the right type of variables, tools, etc. (for example, which types of soils might be successful?).
