Cracking the Code
This 2001 Nova television program tells the history of the human genome project. Due to rights restrictions, the program is not available for downloading, but has been divided into 16 chapters which can be streamed live in your classroom or assigned to students as a homework assignment (depending on internet access).
The topics of the 16 video chapters include how DNA is the chemical messenger; mutations; the race to sequence the human genome; genetic variation; finding cures; the complexity of proteins; genetic causes of disease, DNA databases, and genetic modification. As a teacher, you can select sections to present to the class as a precursor to direct instruction or use to increase your own background information.
