State Names Graphing Activity
This link is for an activity in which students will collect and graph data. The students will determine how many times the letters of the alphabet appear in the state names and then have the opportunity to graph them in a bar graph, stem-and-leaf plot, box-and-whisker plot, anad a histogram. The activity recommends the students complete their graphs by using a graphing tool on the computer, but the graphs could be completed with pencil and paper. This activity is excellent for illustrating the difference between a bar graph and a histogram.
This activity gives and opportunity for cross curricular collaboration. The math and social studies teacher could work together on this to emphasize US geography.
