PAVE: A Vocabulary Strategy
PAVE stands for Prediction-Association-Verification-Evaluation.
This procedure encourages students to 1) predict a word’s meaning within the context it appears, 2) consult a dictionary to find the correct meaning, and 3) re-evaluate their predictions.
A visual example is included.
The PAVE strategy helps students to understand the definition and usage of new words they encounter in reading. There are two ways PAVE can be used. The teacher could have students stop and complete a PAVE form when they come across a new word in a text. The benefit of this is the student has already seen the word in context. However, it could break up the flow of reading. An alternative would be to have students complete a PAVE packet, one page for each term from a vocabulary list provided before reading a text. Students could then refer to their complete PAVE sheets when they encounter each word. See also: http://fcit.usf.edu/fcat/references/pdf/vo4.pdf
