Directed Reading-Thinking Activity
A 10-step procedure for implementing the DRTA strategy with fiction and nonfiction texts.
The DRTA strategy shows students how to develop logic skills such as making inferences and drawing conclusions when reading a text. This strategy is designed to be used frequently rather than only once or with a specific text. It is ideal for fiction but also works well with nonfiction texts. Returning to or reviewing the procedure with students for all texts read in class will help it move from a strategy to second nature for them.
