Main Idea Story Mapping Strategy
This website shares a story mapping strategy that breaks down elements of a story, asks relevant questions, and leads to the development of the main idea and supporting details based on student-generated ideas.
This website models a strategy for helping students to understand each of the individual elements of a written text. Typical workbook exercises ask students to "locate the main idea" and the "supporting details." Finding such information requires students to think about the function of parts of the story in addition to the actual reading of words and ideas. This is challenging for young students who often get caught up in decoding. This strategy reveals the unwritten or hidden elements of a story's structure.
