Creature Feature
The National Geographic Kids website is a wonderful resource geared towards students K-8. This site could be used for student research projects, student exploration and self-directed learning. Not only are the resources visually stunning, they are on one of the most reputable sites on the web. This site received the 2008 Parent’s Choice Award and Webby Award.
When identifying criteria to classify organisms into groups it is important to introduce the various categories of organisms (fish, amphibian, reptile, bird, mammal, invertebrate, and insects). These organisms have been placed in these categories based on specific characteristics. This site could be used for a resource for a group project about classification, a teacher resource for background information about these animals or as an exploratory activity. There is no u201cactivityu201d per se, but the wealth of information about these animals and habitats is too good not to mention. Be sure to click on the animals to explore facts and photos, videos, and maps of the natural habitat. Students can also create an e-card of that animal or print a postcard from the site.
