Creating Food Webs
This website developed by the Gould League provides an interactive learning experience where students build four different food webs for four distinct ecosystems (Australian Grassland-African Grassland-Marine-Antarctic). The students identify organisms as producers or consumers (herbivores, carnivores, or omnivores) and place pictures of those various organisms into the appropriate trophic levels. Once the organisms are correctly sorted, the student can view the overall food web and observe the energy flow between trophic levels.
This web-based activity can be used as a teacher-led classroom activity, group activity or an independent student activity. The students can work at their own pace (or in a group) to research the example organisms in order to correctly categorize them. The mysteries at the bottom of the website are somewhat gruesome because they show pictures of animals that have been killed by other animals.
