The Hat
As Robert Coveyou of Oak Ridge National Lab quipped, "the generation of random numbers is too important to be left to chance." The Hat is a tool that enables teachers to draw names from a digital hat to randomly select names or pairs. Names can be imported either manually or by importing a text file. The program randomly re-orders the entire list automatically and has cool animations and optional sound effects.
Implementation
The Hat has a compact interface that displays a blank field with an icon-based toolbar above and a large Shuffle button below. Simple buttons allow a user to select, add, remove, edit, print, and save lists of students or any othe list a teacher might wish to enter. The Shuffle button causes the interface to come alive, shaking like a go-go dancer, flashing changing colors, and playing a shuffling sound. The individual name picker feature. The Hat selects names from the main list, removing them as they were selected and displaying them in a separate list of selected names, thus ensuring that names could not be selected again.
Classroom Management
- Add student names, center activities, academic vocabulary, questions from Webb's Depth of Knowledge or Bloom's to keep students engaged.
- Great for arbitrary order for kids to do things such as play video games or use the computer.
- The pairs feature is useful for teachers to assign partners for doing projects and games.
