Conflicting Newspaper Accounts
In this lesson students write newspapers about the Battle of Antietam from different points of view (North and South). Students begin by analyzing photographs of the battlefield; they then write their papers covering a variety of topics, and then they read and analyze the Emancipation Proclamation. This is an excellent cross-curricular lesson that combines analyzing media, studying a historical event from differing perspectives, and writing newspaper accounts of the event.
