Human Genome Project
In this web-based lesson, students learn about the Human Genome Project. The activities include an interactive Web activity that simulates the process scientists use to determine the sequence of chromosomal DNA bases. Students learn the history of human genome project, the function of different sections of DNA code, the genetic variation among humans and between humans and other species, and how knowledge of the human genome is being applied to medicine. An interactive Jeopardy type game is included in the materials for his lesson. Students learn about the purpose and work of the Human Genome Project, the process of sequencing human DNA, the functions of different stretches of code on a chromosome, the similarity in the genetic code among humans and between humans and other species, and how the Human Genome Project can contribute to curing diseases. All of this information leads to the student being able to assess the scientific and ethical ramifications of emerging genetic technologies.
